LA Chargers HQ & Training Facility – “The Bolt”

Lochsa Engineering won the 3rd Place CFSEI 2025 Design Excellence award in the Municipal category for "The Bolt"—the LA Chargers Headquarters & Training Facility. The Bolt's unique design show cases the advanced engineering skills and innovative solutions required to bring such a groundbreaking project to life. Spanning 150,000 square feet across 14 acres, the state-of-the-art facility is dedicated to fostering athletic excellence and team collaboration. Lochsa provided CFS engineering for both the interior and exterior framing of the building. This work included designing highly complex vertical, sloped, and multi-planar framing elevations that matched the architectural theme of the Chargers' lightning bolt branding. Unique angles and non-standard connection scenarios were incorporated into the design to create a distinctive aesthetic, requiring specialized engineering solutions.

The challenging design included a front entrance wall tapering vertically in two individual planes, as well as a cantilevered "Bolt Peak" structure that protrudes independent of the walls behind. Advanced structural engineering design software and Building Information Modeling (BIM) were essential for accurately modeling these complex design elements and navigating a high seismic zone, as traditional methods were not sufficient. The use of CFS framing proved crucial in ensuring the structural integrity, hidden aesthetics for the lobby LED boards, and deflection and building drift requirements were met effectively.
